Becoming a green beauty detective is the way of the future for any consumer concerned with their health and sustainability. By choosing high quality personal care products, customers not only get the best potency, but also avoid unnecessary cheap additives and ingredients. Just because a product is “natural,” “organic,” or “green,” doesn’t mean that you should pass by the label and trust it. [Read more…]
As many of you know we started carrying all of Jusu body’s luxurious and local body products earlier this year. This company is all Victoria based and truly aligns with our practices here at DesignHouse to a tee. Jusu Body’s organic roots first sprouted with the opening of the flagship Jusu Bar in 2014. Jusu Body saw an important niche market that has emerged worldwide and decided to introduce it to the Westcoast. The green beauty revolution is slowly gaining traction and speed with the market expected to explode within the next couple years due to increased consumer demand. “Parabens became passé a while ago. Microbeads were completely banned last year. And, even though there are still hundreds (if not thousands) of untested and potentially toxic chemicals in personal care products, a national health revolution is stirring that’s going to shake up the beauty industry and your beauty bag, as we know it—and in a very good way, (source).” All-natural, plant-based, clean personal care products are the future of beauty. What you put on your body is just as important as what you put in it. “Our belief in a zero-impact lifestyle quickly made us realize the pulp from our organic, cold-pressed juices was a nutrient gold mine, and Jusu Body was born. We’ve created conscious, clean, beautiful body products that are rich in vitamins and minerals. This is nourishment that goes way beyond skin deep, (source).” There are three major components that make up Jusu’s unique formula’s and effectiveness.
- 100% Natural: We use 100% food-grade, organic ingredients in Jusu Body products, so they’re naturally rich in key vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. By using food grade blends the body is able to easily recognize ingredients and absorb the benefits.
- Pulp-infused: Jusu Body products are made with the organic pulp recovered from Jusu Bar’s cold-pressed juices. It truly is food for your skin. “Fruits have many wonderful properties but did you know that the main active ingredients in many rejuvenating skin care treatments such as anti-aging, blemish-fighting and skin peel products are actually AHAs or Alpha Hydroxy Acids, naturally found in many fruits, (source).”
- Chemical Free: Many products are labelled “natural,” but they’re far from it. “Ours are truly free from harsh chemicals, synthetic additives, and over-processed emulsifiers and preservatives, (source).”
At the heart of everything Jusu does is a commitment to transparency, respect for the environment, and inspiring good health. Making the switch to truly clean products is one of the easiest ways to make a difference for your health and the planet. Ethically made products that are non-toxic, recyclable and not animal tested happen to be our jam. Mineral makeup has become incredibly popular, and for good reason. Made from minerals like mica, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, mineral foundation is far better for your skin than regular makeup. “Minerals are not new and began as alternative to existing foundations. In recent years the demand for such cosmetics has been driven by the increase in consumer knowledge and demand toward natural products that use as little artificial ingredients as possible, (source).” With improved shelf life, versatility, numerous health benefits and increased quality its no wonder women are making the switch the mineral formulas. Our house line Elate is entirely mineral based and made here in Victoria, B.C. by using mineral base formulas they’re able to provide a completely clean, non toxic line with everything even the most avid makeup wearer needs. Below is a list of reasons why mineral makeup is truly more beneficial than conventional and why you should make the switch:
Health: Mineral makeup is by far the healthiest foundation option for a variety of reasons. Mineral makeup is incredibly safe because it adheres to the natural oils in a person’s skin and doesn’t seep into the pores. It acts as a protective agent against free radicals, which can wreak havoc on sensitive skin. “The unique combination of mica, zinc oxide, iron oxides and titanium dioxide has anti-inflammatory properties which are great for those with problematic skin such as acne, eczema, rosacea, or those sensitive to sunlight following invasive procedures like chemical peels, (source).” A mineral barrier lets your skin breath and provides a barrier against environmental factors. “Pure mineral makeup binds to oils not water. This gives the makeup a natural water resistance and is much better for your skin then conventional cosmetics. Conventional makeup contains chemicals, oils and other additives that can either irritate sensitive skin or cause unnecessary breakouts, (source).”
Quality: Mineral makeup has the added benefit of a little going a long way. A light dusting of powder produces a soft even coverage and mineral eye shadows need just a pinch for a variety of vibrant colours. “Mineral cosmetics should have very few ingredients. Most mineral makeup has a base ingredient of mica. Mica does have a nemesis in the cosmetic industry, the nemesis is named “talc.” Do beware that talc is technically a mineral and used by almost every cosmetic company as their #1 ingredient, however it is a cheap and wasteful filler, (source).” When looking for a high quality mineral powder such as our own Elate brand you want to look for talc free formulas. Mica has incredible skin adhering properties and looks incredibly natural compared to talc. “Mineral formulations do vary from company to company, researching the ingredients a company may use is very important because there are many companies on the market sneaking talc into their formulations, (source).” Mineral makeup also doesn’t hold onto bacteria so it’s shelf live is significantly longer than conventional brands.
Sun Coverage: Mineral makeup can help protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. “There are two types of sunscreen, physical and chemical. Physical sunscreen contains titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, the two minerals most commonly found in mineral makeup, (source).”

Davines made big news when they became recognized internationally as a certified B Corporation at the end of November this year. We first want to define what being a B Corporation is and what traits a company has to possess in order to gain the widely recognized certification. “At the end of November 2016, Davines Group and its 2 brands – Davines and Comfort Zone – became a B Corporation® , a new type of company that meets the highest standards of overall social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability, (source).”Davines consistently displays awareness regarding its ethical and social practices making it only a matter of time before a official certification was met. “Davines Group was born with the aim of being a business with a positive impact both on people and the environment. Through the years, we have carried out this goal with different projects, such as our Ethical Chart and our Sustainability Report , (source).” First let’s define what exactly a B Corporation is:
B Corporation: B Corps are for-profit companies certified by the nonprofit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance. This includes accountability, and transparency. “B Corp is to business what Fair Trade certification is to coffee or USDA organic is to milk, (source).” There are currently over 2100 Certified B Corps from 50 countries and over 130 industries working together toward 1 unifying goal: to redefine success in business.
The next question is how does a company get evaluated in order to become a B Corp? and how does Davines rank in all of this?
Certification: B Corp certification is a long process that usually takes years from application to certification. “To become certified, we had to meet the requirements of the nonprofit B Lab®, which measured “what matters”, meaning the performance of the company regarding five fields: workers, governance, community, customers and environment, (source).” B corporation’s are able to publicly claim an identity as an organization interested in both shareholder and stakeholder success. By having an identity that is clear customers are able to witness the difference in industry norms.
“B Lab certifies companies based on how they create value for non-shareholding stakeholders, such as their employees, the local community, and the environment. Once a firm crosses a certain performance threshold on these dimensions, it makes amendments to its corporate charter to incorporate the interests of all stakeholders into the fiduciary duties of directors and officers, (source).”
Davines’ evaluation ranked a 99 out of 200 and for a company of it’s size is incredibly positive. Davines excelled in various areas including: The analysis of the product life cycle (SLCA) based on their environmental and social impact, the reduction of materials for the packaging of our products, through a lower environmental impact choice and a more responsible product design, the reduction of our waste, and an increase in the percentage allocated to recycling, the involvement of all suppliers in the certification path, the attention to the welfare of the company staff.
Here at DesignHouse we are incredibly fortunate to not only carry Davines products but also posses the same values and ethics surrounding our own business. Want to learn more about Davines? Contact us at 778-433-4393 or on our contact page!
Fall colours always make us excited to transition from the “no makeup, makeup” summer looks to more sultry richer looks. The fall runways felt like a celebration of women, of individuality, and of freedom of expression. “That meant shadow was dark and smudgy, but also bright and precise. The options were endless, but the takeaway was clear: This season have fun with beauty, and most importantly, stay true to yourself, (source).” The makeup displayed the multi dimensional layers of what it means to be a woman and also expressed incredible diversity. Everything from geometric shapes to zero makeup was seen smattering different runways around the globe.
The fashion industry is truly showcasing the shift that is happening in society surrounding being yourself and rocking what feels right specifically for you. We’ve compiled a small list of some of our go-to looks and we’ve coupled them with some of our favourite Elate products to showcase the beauty of green products:
Ruby-red lips were all over the runway this season. Minimal eye makeup needed as the entire focus is on the plump red pout. Another great idea is to “dip a cotton swab dipped in makeup remover and dab it in the center of the lips. It has a slight ombré effect as well, (source).” Elate’s crème lipstick in “Tantric,” is perfect to complete this look.
The more colour the better on the eyes this season. Makeup artists are combining blocks of bold hues on and around the lids. “Now, more than ever, makeup is about enjoying color and making statements, and while some of the looks are fantastical, there are several options that could definitely translate to real life, (source).” Elate’s pressed eye shadow colours in Rave, Kindle and Modish are all great hues to colour block with.
“Ditch the lip liner. Forget the indelible mattes. Makeup artists purposely wanted the models’ lipstick to move around, blurring, fading, and sometimes even smearing it over their mouths, (source).” You know the messy smudged look you get after kissing someone? That’s exactly what we’re talking about. Elate’s creamy non-toxic lipstick in “Warrior,” is the first that came to mind when replicating this trend.
Black liner will never be out of style and fall always seems to bring it back. “It’s time to colour outside the lines with your basic black liner, (source).” Fashion always goes back to black, but this season makeup artists had had enough of the classic flicks. Elate’s black liner is a classic go to!
