Becoming a green beauty detective is the way of the future for any consumer concerned with their health and sustainability. By choosing high quality personal care products, customers not only get the best potency, but also avoid unnecessary cheap additives and ingredients. Just because a product is “natural,” “organic,” or “green,” doesn’t mean that you should pass by the label and trust it. [Read more…]
Mineral makeup has become incredibly popular, and for good reason. Made from minerals like mica, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, mineral foundation is far better for your skin than regular makeup. “Minerals are not new and began as alternative to existing foundations. In recent years the demand for such cosmetics has been driven by the increase in consumer knowledge and demand toward natural products that use as little artificial ingredients as possible, (source).” With improved shelf life, versatility, numerous health benefits and increased quality its no wonder women are making the switch the mineral formulas. Our house line Elate is entirely mineral based and made here in Victoria, B.C. by using mineral base formulas they’re able to provide a completely clean, non toxic line with everything even the most avid makeup wearer needs. Below is a list of reasons why mineral makeup is truly more beneficial than conventional and why you should make the switch:
Health: Mineral makeup is by far the healthiest foundation option for a variety of reasons. Mineral makeup is incredibly safe because it adheres to the natural oils in a person’s skin and doesn’t seep into the pores. It acts as a protective agent against free radicals, which can wreak havoc on sensitive skin. “The unique combination of mica, zinc oxide, iron oxides and titanium dioxide has anti-inflammatory properties which are great for those with problematic skin such as acne, eczema, rosacea, or those sensitive to sunlight following invasive procedures like chemical peels, (source).” A mineral barrier lets your skin breath and provides a barrier against environmental factors. “Pure mineral makeup binds to oils not water. This gives the makeup a natural water resistance and is much better for your skin then conventional cosmetics. Conventional makeup contains chemicals, oils and other additives that can either irritate sensitive skin or cause unnecessary breakouts, (source).”
Quality: Mineral makeup has the added benefit of a little going a long way. A light dusting of powder produces a soft even coverage and mineral eye shadows need just a pinch for a variety of vibrant colours. “Mineral cosmetics should have very few ingredients. Most mineral makeup has a base ingredient of mica. Mica does have a nemesis in the cosmetic industry, the nemesis is named “talc.” Do beware that talc is technically a mineral and used by almost every cosmetic company as their #1 ingredient, however it is a cheap and wasteful filler, (source).” When looking for a high quality mineral powder such as our own Elate brand you want to look for talc free formulas. Mica has incredible skin adhering properties and looks incredibly natural compared to talc. “Mineral formulations do vary from company to company, researching the ingredients a company may use is very important because there are many companies on the market sneaking talc into their formulations, (source).” Mineral makeup also doesn’t hold onto bacteria so it’s shelf live is significantly longer than conventional brands.
Sun Coverage: Mineral makeup can help protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. “There are two types of sunscreen, physical and chemical. Physical sunscreen contains titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, the two minerals most commonly found in mineral makeup, (source).”

Davines made big news when they became recognized internationally as a certified B Corporation at the end of November this year. We first want to define what being a B Corporation is and what traits a company has to possess in order to gain the widely recognized certification. “At the end of November 2016, Davines Group and its 2 brands – Davines and Comfort Zone – became a B Corporation® , a new type of company that meets the highest standards of overall social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability, (source).”Davines consistently displays awareness regarding its ethical and social practices making it only a matter of time before a official certification was met. “Davines Group was born with the aim of being a business with a positive impact both on people and the environment. Through the years, we have carried out this goal with different projects, such as our Ethical Chart and our Sustainability Report , (source).” First let’s define what exactly a B Corporation is:
B Corporation: B Corps are for-profit companies certified by the nonprofit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance. This includes accountability, and transparency. “B Corp is to business what Fair Trade certification is to coffee or USDA organic is to milk, (source).” There are currently over 2100 Certified B Corps from 50 countries and over 130 industries working together toward 1 unifying goal: to redefine success in business.
The next question is how does a company get evaluated in order to become a B Corp? and how does Davines rank in all of this?
Certification: B Corp certification is a long process that usually takes years from application to certification. “To become certified, we had to meet the requirements of the nonprofit B Lab®, which measured “what matters”, meaning the performance of the company regarding five fields: workers, governance, community, customers and environment, (source).” B corporation’s are able to publicly claim an identity as an organization interested in both shareholder and stakeholder success. By having an identity that is clear customers are able to witness the difference in industry norms.
“B Lab certifies companies based on how they create value for non-shareholding stakeholders, such as their employees, the local community, and the environment. Once a firm crosses a certain performance threshold on these dimensions, it makes amendments to its corporate charter to incorporate the interests of all stakeholders into the fiduciary duties of directors and officers, (source).”
Davines’ evaluation ranked a 99 out of 200 and for a company of it’s size is incredibly positive. Davines excelled in various areas including: The analysis of the product life cycle (SLCA) based on their environmental and social impact, the reduction of materials for the packaging of our products, through a lower environmental impact choice and a more responsible product design, the reduction of our waste, and an increase in the percentage allocated to recycling, the involvement of all suppliers in the certification path, the attention to the welfare of the company staff.
Here at DesignHouse we are incredibly fortunate to not only carry Davines products but also posses the same values and ethics surrounding our own business. Want to learn more about Davines? Contact us at 778-433-4393 or on our contact page!
There is a reason we love Elate Cosmetics at designHouse Salon! They embody the same goals and inner passions that we ourselves have. By placing a large emphasis on sustainability, green initiatives, and putting an end to animal testing, Elate is a leader in the green beauty industry. “Through healthy ingredients, sustainable practices, and wellness minded goals, we strive to build confidence through kindness, and allow you to create your own standard of beauty, (source).” This motto is apparent in all of Elate’s products and campaigns, and a strong sense of self is witnessed in the models themselves. The makeup has the ability to showcase each individual’s unique look and also provide a creative space.
Elate strongly encourages women to take that extra bit of time to turn putting makeup on into a ritual, rather than just another step in a busy routine. “We believe everyday routine becomes ritual when the action is more meaningful than the outcome. We believe true beauty is in the ritual itself, (source).” This approach to makeup application means making the healthiest choices for your skin and also feeling good about what you’re putting on your face. As stated by Joli Naturellement “If I had to use one green beauty make-up brand for the rest of my life this one is it, (source).” Women are busier than ever trying to balance their lives and also feel good about themselves. By making a morning routine that is usually interrupted by children or the chimes of a cellphone into a ritual it makes it an expression of self love instead. Elate truly offers products that are cruelty and toxin free, vegan, organic, affordable and sustainable. As mentioned in the popular blog by Laura Jane Atelier she loves that “all of the products are not only clean but reasonably priced which makes them accessible to everyone, (source).”
Elate’s philosophy and products themselves led the company to be the best option for a partnership with designHouse. By having a knowledgeable and talented in house Elate team, designHouse is able to offer not only the best salon services but makeup application as well. Whether it is a quick touch up or a full face makeover, Elate has the products that will stand up, while also being non-toxic and vegan. We all know that we should look after ourselves but most of us get caught up in the daily frenzy of life and forget to check in. How are we supposed to look after others when we aren’t looking after our own selves? This is such an important question to ask and serves as a reminder to take that extra time to do something just for YOU. Taking some time for a little TLC enables you to be a better mother, friend, wife and overall person…and maybe just more tolerable to be around. We’re here to provide some tips for sinking deeper into relaxation and developing those self-care weekend rituals.
10 Tips For a Better You In Just 2 Days
- We love the use of essential oils as a form of relaxation. Blends of lavender, peppermint, or lemon are not only soothing but make your home smell amazing!
- Envision the laziest day in your pj’s and then do just that! Get comfy and kick around the house all day while wearing a hairmask and order food in. We especially love the Nounou mask by Davines, its perfect for dry and damaged strands.
- The ultimate luxury is to take a long hot bath. Fill up your tub with some muscle relaxing Epsom salts or even coconut oil to reveal glowy hydrated skin.
- Part of self care can also be productive! By doing some of those pesky weekday tasks on the weekend can free up some time during the week. Try to do some cooking so you can have prepped meals for the busy week ahead. This leads to less stress, saving money and eating healthier.
- Treat yourself to that salon service you’ve been putting off! The weekend is the perfect time for some pampering like a new cut, colour or blowout. Getting your makeup done is a great way to distress as well. Here at DesignHouse we offer a full range of salon and makeup services even on a lazy Sunday!
- Turn off your phone. According to PopSugar “disconnect from technology and turn off all work-related business. If that’s also impossible, try deleting all your social media apps just for a day — see how you feel when there’s no pressure from the outside world, (source). ”
- If you have the full day to yourself Vega suggests “Pre-planning your perfect solo adventure. Maybe it’s packing up the car and going on a day trip. Maybe it’s committing to seeing 5 (or 2 or 10) new places in your city, (source).”
- Crack open that book that’s been sitting by your bedside for the last couple months. Unplugging from technology and choosing a book instead Superheroyou outlines how “reading for just 6 minutes helps you relax, (source).” We’ll gladly take that relaxation over some screen time!
- Having a journal can be a great way to get your ideas down, brainstorm and also keep you on track with your goals. A great way to optimize this time can be making lists to help organize you for the busy week ahead.
- Get outside for a walk! Getting the blood pumping and your body moving can help clear your head and make you feel really good! Going with a friend or family member makes it a great time for a chat as well.
When planning holiday parties and picking out the perfect cocktail dress, it’s easy to forget about hair and makeup. The holidays are a great time to hire the professionals for a little pampering and undivided attention.
Personalized Skin Care
Skin care is integral to your overall look and also provides the base for makeup application. Our resident makeup artist will begin by determining your skin type, and how best to keep it balanced especially in such a stressful time of year. By offering suggestions for avoiding dry skin and unexpected breakouts you’ll be provided with personalized prepping of the skin before makeup.
Highlighting the Best Features
Knowing how to accentuate your best features can be difficult, whether it be high cheekbones, sparkling eyes or flawless skin. Learning what areas best to emphasize is an important tool that can be carried into everyday makeup applications. Conversely, knowing how to minimize your problem areas, ensure that you leave confident and still looking like yourself.
The Magic Touch
A professional makeup application accounts for any hiccups that could leave you looking washed out or shiny throughout events. Using primers, and specific techniques, makeup artists provide long wear capability allowing you to look fresh longer. They will also provide you with your own techniques you can apply to stretch the length of makeup time. Elate cosmetics are high performance and long-wear insuring that you stay fresh throughout the event. Using oil-blotting sheets, a thin layer of translucent powder and a quick application of lipstick are the easiest ways to stretch a professional application. A makeup artist will tailor your look to your specific desires and needs, ensuring a worry-free experience. A stylist will also take into account the event and overall look that you want to achieve. Having the option to relax and have a blowout ensures hair manageability and reduced stress. Our blowout packages are affordable and can be fit easily into any schedule → http://designhousesalon.com/hair-menu/.
No Foundation Lines
When hosting a holiday party, all eyes are on you—making sure that the skin doesn’t look washed out and also the face, neck and décolletage are all the same color is integral. An artist can seamlessly blend makeup colors and ensure that the look withstands the party. We offer complimentary colour matching and consultations to ensure you’re looking your best → http://designhousesalon.com/makeup-menu/
The holidays can be a busy time, but an appointment with a stylist and makeup artist can be very relaxing. It provides a welcome break and it gives you time to yourself. If there are pre-party jitters, it’s not the time to be messing with liquid eyeliner—so let the pros handle the rest.
It’s Cost Effective
Spending money on yourself during the holidays can seem backwards but by feeling relaxed and prepared it is definitely worth it. Taking the time to ensure you feel confident and love your hair and makeup can make a big difference. The stress will outweigh the cost of getting ready and trying to replicate a desired look. On the day of the party, you’ll be grateful that one more thing is checked off the to-do list.
Here at DesignHouse Salon we perform and offer a variety of beauty packages. We encourage our clients to ask us about our options in order to get the right fit and also achieve the makeover that fits their lifestyle. In fulfilling our promise to exceed your expectations, our journey takes us to Thailand and Cambodia, each place offering an opportunity to learn and to give, and to make a positive impact in the lives of others.
Davines Hair on Stage
We are proud to represent Victoria as Davines’ flagship salon of Vancouver Island at “Hair on Stage” from November 14th to 16th in Bangkok, Thailand. This spectacular event provides us a chance to network with like-minded individuals interested in “sustainable beauty.” Here we can get together to share ideas, projects, and trends from around the world, and learn from internationally renowned hair designers, like Davines Artistic Director, Angelo Seminara, three-time winner of the British Hairdresser of the Year award. We are thrilled to attend this creatively enriching, innovative, and eco-friendly style experience.
Held at Asiatique the Riverfront on Thailand’s major river, Chao Phraya, the Davines Hair on Stage coincides with the annual Loy Krathong, a festival of floating baskets. Traditionally, the festival is held on the 12th full moon of the Thai lunar calendar, and people pay respect (for abundance) and ask forgiveness (for pollution) from the river goddess. As the lit baskets float down river, some people believe that they take away negativity and bring good luck.
Kate Korpi Salon and Academy
In keeping with bringing about positive change, our journey takes us from Bangkok to Phnom Penh, Cambodia to the Kate Korpi Salon and Academy, a Davines sponsored, not-for-profit hair school. We’ll be volunteering from November 29th to December 6th to help transform the lives of trafficked young women, men, and children through education and empowerment. We believe that holistic beauty not only includes environmental sustainability, but also social responsibility in taking steps to help others in order to make our world a better place.
Kate Korpi Salon and Academy is a high-end, western-style hair salon and academy currently staffed by Guest Artists from around the world. The pricing model is set to attract people who have the means to pay, and all profits go to supporting the academy with the hope of creating a self-sustaining operation after three years. Eventually the students will become the teachers, or move on to have their own salons, or work in other high-end salons. At risk youth and traffic survivors will learn the fundamentals of cosmetology, and also develop their confidence, self-esteem, and life skills, which will help them create a career path to secure employment.
If you’re a stylist, or just interested in learning more about how to help, visit the Justice and Soul Foundation for more information on how to become involved with this life transforming and rewarding volunteer experience. If volunteering is not an option available to you, donations are gladly accepted to help with costs for the students. A little or a lot, all is appreciated as it goes to helping students get food, clothes, and housing, as well as pay for tools, tuition, and psychological support. In order to make a difference, as Mahatma Ghandi said, “If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. … We need not wait to see what others do.” Or simply put, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”
