Dry shampoos are by far one of the most convenient hair tools to decrease oil, improve volume and make “dirty,” hair smell like it’s been freshly washed. “Dry shampoos are so convenient, they save time, energy and add a nice gritty texture to your hair. In a pinch a dry shampoo can be a life saver but using them regularly as “shampoo” really doesn’t support keeping your locks full and thick long term, (source).” Dirt, pollution and oil pile up and accumulate daily resulting in build up on the hair shaft. The only way to balance and cleanse these impurities is to actually wash the hair. Dry shampoos are convenient but they don’t actually remove this build up resulting in the hair follicle being even more smothered. In an attempt to mask dirt dry shampoo actually just adds more grime..not what you want on your lovely locks.“The point of dry shampoo is to absorb excess oil, but just like on the rest of your body, your scalp and hair needs oil, (source).” Being oily is seen as undesirable but did you know that it’s integral to balancing our bodies own natural processes? “When you apply dry shampoo, it sucks up any oil on your head but it also stays put, leaving a dry shampoo/oil combination to sit on your follicle and, over time, sink in, (source).” This throws off the delicate balance of your hair resulting in dryer, lackluster locks. This is why it’s incredible important to invest in a high quality shampoo that needs to be used regularly instead of daily dry shampoo mists. We love the Naturaltech line from Davines as the blends of essential oils and soothing nutrients really calm the scalp. The calming line uses a blend of “blueberry phytoceuticals. Blueberries are a nutrient-dense superfood, full of C and B vitamins and antioxidants, which are essential for the health and protection of hair and skin. They are also known for their anti-inflammatory properties, (source).” If you still can’t part with your beloved dry shampoo making your own can be the lesser of two evils.

Treating your hair gently and making it’s health a priority will translate to stronger, longer and more vibrant hair as you age. Use dry shampoos sparingly and if you absolutely have to reach for one consider making your own to keep the scalp healthiest as possible. An added bonus is that by making your own and using a spray you avoid environmentally wasteful aerosols as well.
